Unilorin Student Reportedly Commits Suicide Over Financial Challenges
A male student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, has tragically taken his own life due to ongoing financial difficulties.
The 200-level student, who was in the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), was reported to have been facing significant financial strain, leading to his unfortunate decision.
Sources close to the university community revealed that the student, whose identity has not been disclosed, had been in good academic standing with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.5 in the Department of Mass Communication.
His academic progress, however, was overshadowed by severe financial struggles.
The incident occurred at his private residence located in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin, where the student reportedly consumed a poisonous substance over the weekend, shortly after his roommate left for class.
It was further reported that he left a note for his roommate, explaining that his inability to manage his financial situation was the primary reason for his tragic decision.
The student’s financial woes reportedly began when he resumed school last year. Having lost his father a few years ago, his mother, a retired school teacher, had taken on the responsibility of funding his education.
However, as his financial challenges worsened, his colleagues reportedly rallied to raise funds to support his tuition and basic needs. Despite these efforts, the overwhelming pressure led him to this heartbreaking act.
University officials have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
