The Electoral Commission in Uganda has announced incumbent President Yoweri Museveni as the winner of the recently concluded presidential election, defeating his main rival, popstar-turned-MP Robert Kyagulanyi, also called Bobi Wine.
Museveni secured 58.6 percent of the vote, as Wine trailed behind with 34.8 percent.
“The electoral commission declares Yoweri Museveni… elected President of the Republic of Uganda,” said election commission chairman Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, on Saturday.
The 76-year-old, who is one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, has led the East African country since 1986 and will be extending in his rule to 40 years by 2026.
Recall Bobi Wine, 38, had said the election saw “widespread fraud and violence” on his official Twitter account, on Friday.
The member of Parliament representing Kyadondo County East constituency also alleged in another series of tweets that his home was “under siege”.
“The military has jumped over the fence and has now taken control of our home.
“None of these military intruders is talking to us. We are in serious trouble. We are under siege,” he tweeted.
