In an operation intended to curb drug activities in Lagos, the Lagos State Government has taken swift action by dismissing two State Environmental and Special Offences taskforce officers for misconduct.
The officers, Fatai Yusuf (42) and Hammed Garuba (38), were caught on CCTV stealing mobile phones during a raid on a notorious drug hideout in Alimosho Local Government Area.
The raid targeted a hotel in Gowon Estate, reportedly a hub for drug users and traffickers. While the operation led to the arrest of 43 suspects, the credibility of the taskforce was marred by the unethical actions of Yusuf and Garuba.
A thorough investigation by the taskforce’s Disciplinary Committee confirmed their involvement in the theft, leading to their dismissal. The Lagos State Taskforce has also announced plans to prosecute the duo, reinforcing the state’s zero-tolerance policy for corruption and misconduct among its officials.
CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Taskforce, emphasized the agency’s dedication to upholding public trust. “We will not allow the actions of a few to tarnish the reputation of this agency. Discipline, equity, and justice remain our guiding principles, and any breach will be dealt with decisively,” Akerele stated.
While the operation successfully disrupted drug-related activities, the incident has brought attention to the need for greater oversight and accountability within law enforcement.
