Renowned Nigerian chess advocate and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has announced that he will be stepping away from X, citing emotional fatigue and the overwhelming weight of global issues as his reason.
In a post shared on his page, Onakoya expressed that the emotional burden of the world has become too heavy for him as an empath, stating: “This place has grown too heavy for me. As an empath, I feel too much darkness in the world pressing in.”
He added that the decision to take a break is necessary for him to guard his heart and preserve his mental well-being.
While taking time off most digital spaces, Onakoya noted that he would continue to share his thoughts on Instagram and remain reachable via email for important matters.
The announcement has drawn support from followers and well-wishers, many of whom praised him for prioritizing his mental health.
Onakoya, whose work through Chess in Slums Africa has earned global recognition, has been a leading voice in youth empowerment and education through chess in underserved communities.
His break highlights a growing conversation around mental health, especially among public figures and changemakers.
