Trouble in paradise: Staunch Obidient actor Kenneth Okonkwo dumps LP, denounces Peter Obi

Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson of the Labour Party presidential campaign, has parted ways with the party in what could be considered a major turnaround for the actor-turned-politician.

Okonkwo, a staunch supporter of the party’s presidential candidate in 2023 election Peter Obi, announced his decision in a statement on Twitter on Saturday.

He said Obi has failed to show the leadership required to build a “solid party” that can defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), referring to the Labour Party’s recent crisis.

“I no longer have the confidence that Peter Obi has what it takes to build a party that can win these kakistocrats and kleptocrats, and above all, he has proved that even if the people vote for him, he doesn’t have what it takes to secure the mandate,” he wrote.

Okonkwo’s decision to part ways with the party comes five months after the former Director General of Peter Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe dumped the Labour Party. In January, Okupe announced his resignation from the party, citing ideological differences.

“I have been a rightist and a Liberal Democrat all my entire life. It is therefore this ideological conflict that makes me seek an exit so that I may continue my political activities with liberalism, sincerity and freedom,” he said at the time.
