A tragic boat mishap has rocked Lagos waterways following a late-night accident involving a Savvy Marine vessel, leaving at least five people dead and several others fighting for their lives.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at about 8:35 p.m. along the NigerDock axis of Igbologun, as the boat was reportedly returning from Ilashe Beach House, BlackBox Nigeria reliably gathered.
According to official reports, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Search and Rescue team responded swiftly to distress calls, working in coordination with the Marine Police and other emergency responders. Four passengers were rescued alive and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
However, five other passengers were recovered lifeless at the scene. As of the time of filing this report, search and rescue operations are still ongoing, raising fears that the casualty figure may rise.
The cause of the accident has not yet been fully determined. Preliminary investigations suggest that the boat may have collided with a submerged object while in transit. Adding to the uncertainty, an unconfirmed source told BlackBox Nigeria that the boat may have been overloaded at the time of the incident.
More troubling is the disappearance of the boat’s captain, who is reportedly nowhere to be found. Authorities have not confirmed whether the captain fled, was thrown overboard, or is among those yet to be accounted for.
LASWA officials say a full investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the mishap and to determine any safety violations.
This latest tragedy has once again raised serious concerns about marine safety, regulation enforcement, and night-time boat operations on Lagos waterways.
