The chief financial officer of Bed Bath & Beyond, Gustavo Arnal was found dead, on Friday, after committing suicide by jumping from his apartment building in New York, United States.
The 52-year-old was said to have jumped from the 18th floor of the 60-story tower at 56 Leonard Street.
According to The Guardian UK, the police responded to a 911 call on Friday at 12.30pm, and found the body of a dead man who was later identified as Arnal.
They did not provide further details on the circumstances leading to his death but said the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office would determine the cause of the fatality.
In a statement, Harriet Edelman, independent chair of the Bed Bath & Beyond board, said: “Gustavo will be remembered by all he worked with for his leadership, talent and stewardship of our company.
“I am proud to have been his colleague, and he will be truly missed by all of us at Bed Bath & Beyond and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond in 2020. He previously worked for the cosmetics brand, Avon, in London and Walgreens Boots Alliance. He also had a 20-year stint with Procter & Gamble, according to his LinkedIn profile.
In 2021, he made more than $2.9 million via Bed Bath & Beyond, including $775,000 in salary and the rest in stock awards, according to InsiderTrades.com.
Meanwhile, the home goods retailer has recently been facing financial woes. Shares in the Union, New Jersey-based business lost nearly a quarter of their value on Wednesday, after the company announced a restructuring that includes store closures, layoffs and a possible stock offering.
