President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the National Assembly to initiate constitutional amendments that will allow the creation of state police as a lasting solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.
Speaking on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasized that empowering states to establish their own police forces is crucial to strengthening internal security and addressing the rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism.
He noted that while the federal police structure remains overstretched, devolving power to states will bring law enforcement closer to the people and enable quicker response to threats.
The President urged lawmakers to “start reviewing our laws,” stressing that national security must be prioritized above politics.
His administration, he added, remains committed to working with both legislative chambers to advance effective and people-centred reforms.
Tinubu’s remarks come at a time when insecurity has worsened in many parts of the country, with renewed calls from governors and civil society groups for the decentralisation of the police system.
