President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to formally swear in Tunji Disu as the 23rd substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Wednesday, following unanimous approval of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council earlier today.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House, Abuja, marking the official confirmation of Disu’s leadership of the Nigeria Police Force after serving as acting IGP.
The Nigeria Police Council, presided over by President Tinubu and composed of the governors of the 36 states, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and other senior officials gave its unanimous approval for Disu’s appointment on Monday, effectively ratifying his elevation to the country’s top police post.
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that there will be no need for Senate confirmation before Disu’s swearing-in, a departure from traditional practice.
Instead, the Police Council’s backing is sufficient under current law to fast-track his substantive appointment.
Disu, a veteran officer with more than three decades of service, was appointed acting IGP on 24 February 2026 after the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
His confirmation comes amid ongoing calls for enhanced police effectiveness and reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture.
Since his appointment as acting IGP, Disu has issued directives calling for heightened security measures across the country, advising commissioners of police to increase surveillance and intelligence gathering to safeguard national peace.
