In a significant gesture of respect and tribute, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri after former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made during an expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.

This decision comes as a mark of honor to the late President Buhari, who passed away on July 13 at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.

Following his demise, Buhari’s body was flown back to Nigeria and received with military honors in Katsina State before being laid to rest in Daura on July 15, in accordance with Islamic tradition.

It would be recalled that barely one month into office, President Tinubu also named the Maiduguri International Airport after the late Buhari who had just handed over the reigns of power after 8 years in office.

President Tinubu, in his earlier condolences, hailed Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman” whose life was defined by duty, honor, and a deep commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.

The renaming of the University of Maiduguri is seen as a fitting tribute to Buhari’s legacy and contributions to the nation.
