The Federal Government has initiated the release of 4,068 inmates serving various terms of imprisonment across custodial centers nationwide.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo confirmed this in a tweet, stressing the urgency for criminal justice reform to expedite trials and reduce the number of awaiting-trial inmates.
The release was held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja. The facility, with an installed capacity of 560, held 730 inmates and 565 awaiting trial.
The initiative, backed by philanthropic donations totaling N585 million, primarily targeted indigent inmates unable to pay fines.
Each released inmate received a stipend to support their reintegration into their communities.
