IPresident Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking his continued leadership of the regional bloc one year after assuming office.
Tinubu, who ascended to power in May 2023, secured his re-election during the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Sunday.
According to Channels news, President Tinubu called on ECOWAS member states to increase financial commitments to combat terrorism in the region in his address at the summit.
“As we move to operationalize the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) in the fight against terrorism, I emphasize that success hinges not only on strong political will but also on substantial financial resources,” he stated.
“We must, therefore, fulfill the expectations and recommendations of our defense and finance ministers to address insecurity and stabilize our region. Member states should step up their commitments to provide the necessary resources for regional stability.”
