President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has constituted an 11-member committee to establish the Grid Asset Management Company Limited (GAMCO) as part of fresh efforts to address long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector.

The committee, inaugurated by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, is tasked with reviewing existing laws, regulations and policies guiding the country’s electricity value chain to support reforms aimed at improving power transmission and grid management.

The proposed GAMCO is expected to tackle inefficiencies in the national grid that have led to stranded electricity and frequent grid instability across the country.

As part of its objectives, the company plans to unlock stranded electricity from three National Integrated Power Plants (NIPP) and develop a high-capacity transmission corridor along the Benin–Lagos axis to boost electricity transmission.

Officials said the initiative is projected to recover at least 1,600 megawatts (MW) of electricity within the next 18 to 24 months. Plans are also underway for the construction of a new 330KV+ double-circuit transmission line to further strengthen the power grid.

The Federal Government will fully own the proposed company as a commercial venture, with its shares to be held by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).

The move forms part of ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to stabilise Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and improve power supply nationwide.
