President Bola Tinubu delivered a poignant address on Democracy Day, expressing his profound admiration and respect for Moshood Abiola, also known as MKO, the victor of the annulled 12 June 1993 presidential election.
Tinubu commended the late MKO Abiola for his unwavering commitment to retaining his rightful mandate, a principled stance that ultimately led to his demise while in military custody.
During his speech, President Tinubu paid tribute to the enduring legacy of Chief MKO Abiola, highlighting his steadfast dedication and selflessness in upholding democratic ideals. Tinubu acknowledged Abiola’s tremendous sacrifice, describing him as the custodian of the sacred mandate that was callously nullified.
“He laid down his life in unwavering, patriotic defense of the principles of democracy, as evidenced by his selection as the duly-elected President by his fellow countrymen and women,” declared the Nigerian president, his words resonating with the audience.
It is noteworthy that President Tinubu’s predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, previously designated 12 June as Nigeria’s Democracy Day. Moreover, Buhari posthumously honored MKO Abiola with Nigeria’s highest accolade, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), recognizing his significant contributions to the nation.
