Tinubu appoints LASU VC’s husband to head FCCPC

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Olatunji Bello to head the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), pending Senate confirmation.

Bello is the husband of the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello. Presidential aide Ajuri Ngelale confirmed his nomination in a statement on Monday evening.

According to the statement, the President expects the new chief executive officer to ensure the realization of the commission’s mandate of protecting and promoting the interests and welfare of Nigerian
consumers.

He also expects the agency to ensure the adoption of measures to guarantee the safety and quality of goods and services.

Bello, a lawyer, administrator, and former journalist, served as Secretary to the Lagos State Government and holds a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos, having been called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002.

His career spans significant political engagements, including roles as Special Assistant to Bashorun MKO Abiola and active membership in the pro-democracy movement, NADECO.

He joined the administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Head of the Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency (LASSA) and later as Commissioner for Environment.

Bello continued his public service under subsequent Lagos State administrations, notably serving as Commissioner for Environment under Governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, and as Secretary to the State Government during the administration of Governor Ambode.

His journalistic career began at Concord Newspapers in 1985, where he held key editorial positions before winning the US Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship and chairing the Editorial Board of THISDAY Newspapers in 2001.
