A key political appointee of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has resigned as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), in what signals a growing wave of exits tied to 2027 political ambitions.

Gawuna, a former deputy governor of Kano State and 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), tendered his resignation in a letter dated March 27, 2026, stating that it takes immediate effect.

In his letter, Gawuna made it clear that his decision was in compliance with a directive from President Tinubu requiring political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down in line with provisions of the Electoral Act.

“My resignation is in strict compliance with the President’s directive…” he stated.

The development places him among a growing list of Tinubu’s appointees exiting government positions as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to intensify.

Beyond compliance with federal directives, Gawuna’s resignation is also being linked to emerging political realignments in Kano State.

Reports indicate that the APC chieftain may be preparing for a fresh political move, with speculation around a possible defection to ADC aligning with Kwankwaso who had recently defected.

In his resignation, he expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as a privilege and pledging to ensure a smooth transition.

His exit comes shortly after other high-profile resignations within the administration, reinforcing indications that more political office holders may step down in the coming days.
