A fatal road accident claimed the lives of three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, while seven others were rescued by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in Ikorodu on Friday.

The tragic incident occurred at Powerline Junction, before Aleje, inward Ikorodu Roundabout, when a sand laden tipper truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into multiple vehicles, including a Toyota Corolla, a multi-purpose bus, and four tricycles.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who led the rescue operation alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, confirmed that seven other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident was the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bakare Oki, who described the crash as “tragic and avoidable,” attributing it to reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance.

“This unfortunate incident underscores the need for regular vehicle checks and strict adherence to speed limits, especially for heavy-duty trucks,” he said. “We urge drivers to prioritise safety to prevent further loss of innocent lives”.

The remains of the deceased students have been deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary, while efforts are ongoing to contact their families.
