Tension as NDLEA officials, thugs clash in Lagos

There was palpable tension in the Lagos Island area of Lagos on Saturday morning following a gun face-off between suspected thugs and operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Citing eyewitnesses, Sahara Reporters reported that the officials of the anti-drug agency had invaded Patey Street on Lagos Island to arrest some suspected drug traffickers in the area before some armed thugs intervened to stop the action.

What followed was several gunshots renting the air as the agents battled to bring order to the area. According to videos circulating on social media, residents scampered to safety during the shoot-out which left many injured.

Reacting to the development, many Nigerians have condemned the brutal force employed by the NDLEA officials, accusing them of causing pandemonium in the said area.

However, the anti-drug agency, via its Twitter page, claimed that the narratives making round about the incident are fake.

“A lot of fake narratives have been going on on what happened at Petty area of Lagos Island earlier today. Please disregard them. Truth is our operatives went for the arrest of a major drug kingpin and we got her and 5 others with almost 6,000kg of drugs despite attacks on our men,” NDLEA wrote.

This development comes days after the agency arrested musicians, Zinoleesky and Mohbad over alleged possession of hard drugs. Although both singers have regained freedom, Nigerians berated the agency for arresting and manhandling them without a warrant.
