Teenager Drowns While Fishing In Delta State
The Delta State Police Command yesterday confirmed the death of a 15-year-old boy who drowned while fishing in a stagnant river in Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area.
The deceased simply identified as Onoriode, drowned on Tuesday while fishing in the Ikpirima Quarters of Osubi.
Witnesses in the area disclosed that Onoriode, a Junior Secondary School three (JSS3) student, went with three of his friends to fish but however did not return.
“Onoriode came in the company of three other children, who were within ages 13 and 15. The deceased’s friends were from Agbasa in Warri South.
We also want to appeal to the government to help channel the water into the canals to avoid stagnant waters”.
Residents of the Ikpirima community have been thrown into a melancholic state as the death of Onoriode is a painful one.
A relation disclosed that the deceased’s family has not been informed about the tragic incident.
She said the news would be devastating to them, especially their mother, who is a petty trader.
One of the community leaders in an interview said children are highly prohibited from going to that river.
“None of the children from this area dare goes close to it. You can see that they are all from a distant community” he said.
Another resident, while bemoaning the death of Onoriode called out the government to do something to channel the water appropriately as the river claims life yearly in the community.
