Tears as OAU student dies in septic tank accident

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife has been thrown into mourning after the painful death of a female 200-level student of the institution, Ajibola Heritage Ayomikun.

The student, who was of the Linguistics and African Languages department, died after falling into a soakaway in a private hostel on campus, on Wednesday.

Confirming the unfortunate incident in a statement by its spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution stated that the deceased fell into the soakaway in BVER, one of the private hostels in its student village.

“When the news got to us, we immediately mobilised the firemen from the University, Osun state and the OAU teaching hospital who through concerted efforts got the student out,” the statement read in part.

The institution noted that Ayomikun was, however, confirmed dead on arrival at the OAU teaching hospital.

According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede sympathised with the other students while commiserating with the parents of the deceased.

Describing the incident as unacceptable, the VC promised to critically look into the circumstances that led to the student’s death and mete out appropriate sanctions against those involved or whoever is found culpable.

Meanwhile, Ayomikun’s death comes months after students protested against alleged negligence on the part of the management of the institution’s health centre, which led to the death of a final year student of the department of Foreign Languages, Aisha Adesina.
