Team Nigeria hits 30 medals at Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria has continued its winning streak at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, as it now conveniently claims the sixth place on the medal table.

The country is also the number one African team on the medal log, two places ahead of South Africa who claims the eighth position, while Kenya and Uganda holds the 12th and 13th spots, respectively.

On Saturday, Favour Ofili secured Nigeria’s 30th medal after winning silver in the women’s 200 meters race.

The 19-year-old sprinter clocked 22.51 seconds to finish behind Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah at the Alexander Stadium.

Earlier, Njideka lylazi and Ugochi Alarm won gold and bronze respectively for Team Nigeria in the Women’s F56/57 Para Shot Put event.

Two-time Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Ebikewenimo Welson also picked up the silver medal in the men’s freestyle 57kg wrestling event after losing to India’s Kumar Ravi in the final.

In the men’s freestyle 74kg, Ogbonna John won a bronze medal, beating England’s Charlie Bowling.

Team Nigeria’s Obazuaye also beat Felicity Pickard of England 3-1 to win bronze in the Women’s Para Table Tennis event.

Cynthia Ogunsemilore clinched bronze after a 5-0 semi-final loss to Any Broadhurst of Northern Ireland, while Hannah Reuben won silver in the women’s wrestling 76kg category.

Another bronze medal came for Nigeria, thanks to Ogunkunle who defeated Raj Alagar 3-0 in the men’s singles classes 3-5 Para Table event.

In boxing, Onyekwere Innocent won bronze in Super heavy weight 92+kg category. Esther Oshoba, on the other hand, secured a place in the final of the women’s over 54kg-57kg featherweight after a 4-1 win over Australia’s Tina Rahimi.

As of the end of Day 9, Team Nigeria has claimed 30 medals: 9 gold, 8 silver, and 13 bronze medals, with more medals likely to be secured in other events.
