Tambuwal breaks silence on stepping down for Atiku at PDP primary

The governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal has finally broken his silence over his decision to withdraw his presidential bid at the presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Tambuwal had made headlines after he stepped down to support the candidacy of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, moments before the election.

His move, according to many, helped Atiku clinched the PDP presidential ticket, as he polled 371 votes to beat 11 other aspirants including former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking about his last-minute decision to throw his weight behind Atiku, Tambuwal said it was a sacrifice for Nigerians and Nigeria as a country.

He made this known on Friday while addressing a group of supporters in Sokoto, following his arrival from Abuja.

“What we have done is for the good of our party and the country. I appreciate everyone of you that prayed for me and our party. The sacrifice that I have made on your behalf is aimed at strengthening our party, our democracy, and, by the grace of God, soft landing our polity,” the governor said.

“This is in consonance with the teachings of our leaders and the [emulation] of the examples they have given to us in the past: that we must continue to make sacrifice for the good of all of us and our country.”

The governor finally thanked the people of Sokoto State as well as supporters across the country their support, assuring them that they would work together to ensure the victory of the PDP at the 2023 elections.

Meanwhile, the National Working Committee of the PDP had presented the Certificate of Return to Atiku, as the campaign season formally kicks off.
