In a unanimous decision, Nigeria’s Supreme Court has overturned the Court of Appeal’s ruling that affirmed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
The apex court, on Friday, declared that the appellate court had no jurisdiction to intervene in the party’s leadership dispute, as it is an internal party affair.
This verdict effectively ends Abure’s claim to the LP’s national leadership, plunging the party into further crisis.
The Court of Appeal had previously ruled in January that Abure remained the LP’s National Chairman, citing that party leadership was beyond judicial intervention.
However, the Supreme Court’s decision has reinforced that leadership disputes within a political party cannot be resolved through the judiciary.
Lately, Abure remarked about making Anambra forthcoming elections a litmus test for the 2027 elections ahead.
The LP is now left to pick up the pieces, as the fight for control of its leadership continues.
