The captain of Nigeria’s women’s national football team, Rasheedat Ajibade, has disclosed that the Super Falcons are yet to receive the $100,000 cash prize promised to them by President Bola Tinubu after their triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

President Tinubu had, during a reception at the Presidential Villa earlier this year, announced a package of rewards for the team, including the cash gift, houses, and national honours for both players and coaching staff.

However, speaking in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Ajibade said none of the promises had been fulfilled.

We have not received our money, but hopefully, it would be paid,” Ajibade stated.

“They have not paid, all the promises, we have not received anything.”

The 24-year-old forward’s comments come amid growing calls for better welfare and prompt reward fulfilment for Nigeria’s sports teams.

Just a week after the Super Falcons’ reception, Tinubu announced similar rewards for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their continental victory.

It is unclear whether the basketball team has received their promised benefits.

As of press time, neither the Ministry of Sports Development nor the Presidency has issued an official response to Ajibade’s claim.
