Nigeria’s Super Falcons have advanced to the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), defeating defending champions South Africa 2-1 in a fiercely contested semi-final clash on Tuesday evening.

In what was dubbed a “final before the final,” goals from Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie helped Nigeria avenge their painful 2022 loss to Banyana Banyana and keep alive hopes of clinching a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

Ajibade gave Nigeria the lead just before half-time, calmly converting a penalty after South African defender Bambanani Mbane was penalized for a handball inside the box.

The goal capped a dominant first-half display by the Falcons, who kept South Africa on the back foot with high pressing and sharp attacking plays.

South Africa came out stronger in the second half and found a lifeline in the 60th minute when Hildah Magaia was brought down by Osinachi Ohale. Linda Motlhalo stepped up and slotted home from the spot to level the match.

As the clock ticked towards extra time, Michelle Alozie delivered a moment of brilliance.

In the 92nd minute, the U.S.-based defender unleashed a stunning 35-yard strike that swerved past goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and crashed into the net, sending Nigerian fans into a frenzy inside Stade Larbi Zaouli.

The dramatic winner sparked tense final moments, with tempers flaring, yellow cards issued, and key forward Chinwendu Ihezuo stretchered off due to injury.

Despite the pressure, the Super Falcons held their ground through nine minutes of stoppage time to secure the victory.

The win ensures Nigeria’s unbeaten run at the tournament continues and sets up a highly anticipated final in Rabat, where they will aim to add another title to their unmatched legacy in African women’s football.

For South Africa, their reign as champions comes to a bitter end, but they will have a shot at redemption in the third-place playoff.
