Nigeria’s Super Falcons have cemented their legendary status in African football, becoming the first team on the continent to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) a record 10 times.
In a thrilling final under the Rabat night sky, the Falcons staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback against hosts Morocco, completing what they had proudly dubbed #MissionX.
The defending champions looked down and out at halftime, trailing 2-0 to a vibrant Moroccan side buoyed by a roaring home crowd.
But the second half saw the Nigerian team deliver a display of grit and brilliance that will be remembered as one of the greatest comebacks in WAFCON history.
Esther Okoronkwo ignited hope in the 64th minute with a cool finish that cut the deficit to 2-1.
Minutes later, the momentum swung firmly in Nigeria’s favour when Folashade Ijamilusi slotted in the equalizer, capping off a dazzling solo run and assist from Okoronkwo.
With the score tied and the match edging towards extra time, substitute Jennifer Echegini emerged as the hero.
In the 88th minute, she pounced on a thunderous long-range freekick from Okoronkwo, firing home the decisive goal to silence the Moroccan crowd and seal Nigeria’s unprecedented 10th title.
“This team has proven again that the Super Falcons are not just champions, we are a legacy,” said head coach Randy Waldrum after the match.
“Coming from 2-0 down in a final takes character, and these women showed the heart of lions tonight.”
The historic win further underlines Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football and secures their status as the continent’s undisputed powerhouse.
