Strike: We Can’t Meet ASUU’s Demands Now, Says Ngige

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has disclosed that the government of the day cannot meet the requests of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) due to the present economic situation in the country.

Ngige stated this on Wednesday night while briefing journalists immediately after a closed-door meeting with ASUU members in Abuja. The minister reiterated that the government had offered only N20bn which it can afford.

He said: “This government is not against revitalisation but this government says that because of dare economic situation, because of COVID-19, we cannot really pay in the N110 billion which they are demanding for revitalization.”

ASUU is presently demanding N110bn for revatilisation of tertiary institutions amongst other requests.
