The strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which started on June 3 has brought government and commercial activities to a halt nationwide, entering its second day today.
The strike was called over a new minimum wage and the recent electricity tariff hike for Band A customers. On Monday night, the federal government and organized labor reached an agreement on a new minimum wage of “above N60,000”. However, the statement did not mention the duration of the strike or the electricity tariff hike.
The agreement reads:
– The President is committed to a National Minimum Wage higher than N60,000.
– The Tripartite Committee will meet daily for the next week to agree on a National Minimum Wage.
– Labour will convene a meeting to consider the President’s commitment.
– No worker will be victimized for participating in the industrial action.
The agreement was signed by government and labour representatives. Despite this, the NLC announced on Tuesday through their X page that the strike is still on, pending a meeting scheduled for June 4. The NLC stated, “Until we hear from our organs at our meeting scheduled for today, June 4, we are still on strike.”
