Speed Darlington Takes Legal Action, Files N300 Million Lawsuit Against IGP Over Unlawful Detention

Singer Speed Darlington has filed a N300 million lawsuit against Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, accusing him of unlawful detention.

The lawsuit follows the singer’s controversial arrest in late 2024 over his comments about Afrobeat artist Burna Boy.

Speed Darlington was arrested by the police under accusations of defamation and cyberstalking after making remarks about Burna Boy. Despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court on December 23, 2024, the singer remained in detention, prompting accusations from his lawyer that Burna Boy had influenced the police to detain him.

On January 6, 2025, the court issued a fresh order for the police to release Speed Darlington, reinforcing the earlier ruling, BlackBox Nigeria reported.

Following the court’s directive, Darlington wasted no time in filing the lawsuit, seeking N300 million in damages for the violation of his rights.

The singer’s legal team has strongly criticized the police’s actions, calling the extended detention an infringement on his constitutional rights.

The case has ignited further controversy, with many questioning the role of influential figures in the legal and political system.
