SP Benjamin Hundeyin Criticized Over Claims on Murder Suspect’s Detention

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, is under criticism after denying claims by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) that murder suspect Ayomide Adeleye is not in prison.

SP Hundeyin, while countering the publication, provided paperwork showing that Ayomide was charged with unlawful killing and remanded in prison. However, this did little to change public opinion, as many online users questioned the credibility of the evidence provided.

One user, Fola Fola, expressed doubt on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Just paperwork’s??? Lol, Nigeria I hail o. I no talk anything o, I just dey hail una. Twale 0000. Ahhh, Nigerians are doomed.”

In response, SP Hundeyin defended his position, writing, “When he was brought before a magistrate in November, you think they brought him from his house? Just paperwork.”

One user, Faseun4You, commented on X (formerly Twitter), “Oga Ben, can you bank this up with further evidence? Maybe a live VC in prison with the culprit… I’m just asking and suggesting peacefully.”

SP Hundeyin replied, “I don’t work in prisons. Kindly direct that request to the appropriate quarters.”

Another user, Jamalmorgan, tweeted, “One cannot be too sure with the most corrupt agency in the world (The Nigerian Police)… a picture showing him in detention would be more clear… You lots are known to divert judgment.”

The controversy revolves around the case of Ayomide Adeleye, a 200-level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU). Adeleye was arrested in September 2024 for the alleged murder of Christianah Idowu, a 300-level student at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

However, reports from the FIJ suggest that Adeleye was never actually in prison and had never been officially remanded for murder.

Adeleye appeared before Magistrate Seyi Omodara at the Ogba Magistrate Court in November, where a remand order was issued to detain him at Ikoyi Prison pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

While SP Hundeyin insists on the accuracy of the records presented, public trust in the police remains a major hurdle, with many Nigerians demanding more transparent proof of Adeleye’s detention.
