Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore has explained why he “cannot stand” former President Olusegun Obasanjo, citing deep frustration with the direction of Nigeria under the ex-leader’s administration.

In an interview on an X programme “Nix: Outside the Box”, Sowore said his criticism is rooted in his personal experience entering university during Obasanjo’s government, a period he described as the start of a serious decline in the country’s education sector.

“Obasanjo is probably one of the people I can’t even stand because of what we knew about him before we went to the university,” he said, adding that the administration’s policies hurt standards in schools.

Sowore also stressed that he has never met Obasanjo in person, underscoring his view that the former president’s legacy left a negative imprint on Nigeria’s social systems.

“I have never been to Aso Rock before… I don’t even know how his face looks,” he said, highlighting his distance from and disapproval of past leadership.
