South Africans drag Burna Boy’s remarks about just concluded pageant

Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has come under fire South Africans following his remark on the recently concluded Miss South Africa pageant.

After Mia Le Roux, the first deaf contestant with a cochlear implant, was crowned, Burna Boy took a swipe at South Africans.

“So after all that……..,” he wrote on X.

Burna Boy’s comments followed controversial withdrawal of a Nigerian-South African model Chidinma Adetshina from the pageant after the South African Home Affairs ministry accused her mother of fraud and identity theft due to her Nigerian heritage. This sparked national controversy and discussions about identity and representation in South Africa.

For South Africans, Burna Boy’s tweet was a trigger.

One South African, @Carlos_Calvin expressed pride in Mia Le Roux, stating, “She represents South African Sign Language, an official language here. Just focus on your upcoming album and your president.”

Another reflected on South Africa’s diversity, “SA is a diverse country. No African should shame us for celebrating our culture.”

Others directed criticism towards Burna Boy. One South African remarked, “Burna Boy stays permanently in Europe with white neighbors because his country is not up to par. Be proud of South Africa.”

Another defiantly stated, “She is OUR Miss SA. Proud of her and what she stands for. We will continue to reject you here in SA. Lol.”
