The Federal Government has said it will stop at nothing to regulate social media.

In an interview with newsmen in Washington, United States, on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed made this known.

“Speaking about fake news and its danger, we will take it seriously. We won’t rest until we regulate social media else nobody will survive it,” he said.

The minister also debunked reports that he sneaked out of the country to the U.S to meet Twitter executives, describing them as “fake news”.

He said the purpose of his visit to the U.S was to meet with policy institutes to perform research and advocacy concerning President Muhammed Buhari’s effort so far in combating insurgency, kidnapping, banditry and other unpatriotic and crime-committing happenings in Nigeria.

Mohammed explained that FG placed a ban on Twitter because its platforms were continually used for activities that threatened Nigeria’s corporate existence, contrary to the propagated belief that FG banned Twitter because Mr President’s comment on it (Twitter) was deleted.

Recall that the Federal Government, on June 4, placed an indefinite ban on the microblogging and social networking platform, Twitter.

Speaking further, the minister outlined the need for the organization to obtain a license from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to enable it carry out its operation in Nigeria.
