Six years of Buhari administration: Nigerians give scorecard

On May 29, 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari was inaugurated for his first term in office. The retired military general, who is of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated the then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, bringing an end to the 16-year rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The focal points of Buhari’s campaign centred on fighting corruption, improving the economy and combatting insecurity.

The Daura-born former military dictator was re-elected in 2019 after he defeated PDP candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar — marking the begining of another four years which will span till May 29, 2023.

Today marks six years in the saddle for Buhari and the APC, and as expected, differing opinions permeate national discourse as regards to their performance so far.

In a 45-page document, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina highlighted the ‘giant strides’ of the Buhari administration in different sectors of national life.

“When the Administration breasts the tape in another two years, by the grace of God, the applause will be resounding, even from the worst of sceptics,” Adesina said in another statement.

However, a number of Nigerians have taken to social media to disagree with this claim as they berated the present administration for failing to fulfil its campaign promises. Here are some of their reactions.
