For many Nigerians, 2015 was a year of political evolution. The then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party which had vowed to remain in office for the next 50 years but was shown the exit as a retired general, Muhammadu Buhari returned to defeat incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan.
However, for the entertainment scene, 2015 was more iconic because of the supremacy battle between the head honchos of music power houses, Mavins and YBNL led by DonJazzy and Olamide respectively.
Yes, there was a mild drama in the 2015 annual edition of Headies Award event between Olamide Baddo and Don Jazzy, two music giants in the entertainment industry.
BlackBox Nigeria will take you through some details of the tussle.
What really happened?
Reekado Banks, the signee to Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, was announced the winner of the highly coveted Next Rated category.
But, Olamide rejected, arguing that his YBNL-protégé, young Lil Kesh deserved it more.
The popular rapper and music executive began throwing words at each other with fans home and abroad interfering in it with funny reactions all over social media.
Olamide enumerated some songs that the YBNL has produced that made Lil Kesh to deserve the feat but this is not without comment from Don Jazzy, who came to the stage to say that the YBNL boss can come for the gift if “he wants to take it”.
The Settlement
As we entered the new year in January 2016, the two mega stars posted similar photos on their Instagram accounts, with a message to their fans to show the settlement of their rift.
“We are very sorry for the wahala. Make una no vex ooo. It is our responsibility to lead but then again we re only human and we all make mistakes. #WeAreSorryHeadies #WeAreSorryFans #PeaceAndUnity #YBNL #SMD #OneLagos #OneNigeria,” the message reads.
Aftermath
In April 2023, Don Jazzy, the director of Mavin Records, came out to say that he has regretted his altercation with Olamide.
He disclosed this on an episode of Doyin’s Corner podcast hosted by former Big Brother Naija housemate, Doyin.
In the show, Don Jazzy admitted that his action at the 2015 Headies Awards was out of character.
According to him, “There was the Headies incident [my alteration with Olamide]. That one was also out of character. I regretted that like instantly as soon as I came down from the stage.”
Also, he claimed that he had already apologized to the organizers of the award and Olamide.
