Seun Kuti laments after his drummer ‘japa’ during US tour

Nigerian singer and instrumentalist, Seun Anikulapo Kuti has cried out after his drummer went missing during his recent music tour in the United States.

Taking to his Instagram page on Tuesday, the son of late Afrobeat legend and cultural icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, expressed gratitude to people who contributed to the success of the just-concluded tour.

While thanking his crew members, Seun revealed that his last two performances were particularly hard because his drummer identified as Shina decided to do a runner on him, perhaps in search for greener pastures in the US. Such move reflects the ‘japa’ syndrome — the trend of Nigerians leaving the country to pursue their dreams in foreign countries.

Big Bird, as he is fondly called, added that it was the second time he would be experiencing such.

“A big thanks you to everyone who made this tour a huge success. @morgan.margolis @shapiroshapiroandshapirollp @mitchum.yacoub @frank_moka1 every member of the team and crew,” he wrote.

“The last 2 shows were hard as my drummer Shina decided to do a runner on me. Second time this is happening to me in 15 years but it still hurts just the same. The Ancestors will definitely do their job!! Anyways off to Switzerland. It’s time for Paleo Jazz!!”
