Khaby Lame, a Senegalese-born creator, has made history after he became the most-followed user on TikTok.
According to The Verge, the 22-year-old on Wednesday attained a follower base of 142.7 million accounts.
Lame surpassed American star, Charli D’Amelio who formerly held the record with 142.3 million followers.
Lame, who lives in Italy, gained TikTok fame for his parodies of complicated “life hacks”. The silent comedian is also known for his now-iconic hand gestures and stare of disapproval.
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, he lost reportedly lost his job in March 2020 as a factory worker in Italy.
After moving back into his parents’ home in Turin, he began making TikTok videos as a getaway from boredom. His contents would soon viral and racked up millons of views.
The New York Times said his “wordless, expressive reaction clips” sparked an international following that goes beyond his early Italian-heavy clips.
In an interview with Forbes, Lame had said his huge popularity is due to his physical comedy transcending language barriers.
