Over 10,000 households in Lagos East Senatorial District benefitted from the annual Christmas and New Year food distribution program organized by Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru. The event, held at the Senator’s constituency office located at 68 TOS Benson Road, Ikorodu, provided much-needed relief and festive cheer to residents.
The program commenced with a welcoming address by Dr. Saheed Ibikunle, who acknowledged the dignitaries present, including former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye; Senator Anthony Adefuye; Chief Imam Oloworibi; Chief Imam of Oriwu Central Mosque, Alhaji Samadaneen; and several other prominent figures.
In his goodwill message, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye lauded Senator Abiru for his impactful leadership in Lagos East. “Senator Abiru has always been a man of excellence, even before becoming a senator. I pray that God continues to uplift and support him to even greater heights,” Ogunleye stated.
Senator Abiru, while addressing the beneficiaries, explained the scale and intent behind the initiative. He noted that the food pack distribution was being conducted simultaneously across all five local governments and 11 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) within the district. Each household received a combo package containing an 8kg bag of rice and an 8kg bag of garri
“This initiative is part of our efforts to support our people, especially during these challenging times brought on by necessary economic reforms. It is also aligned with the policies of our president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose bold reforms aim to reset the economy for long-term growth,” Senator Abiru remarked.
He further elaborated on the federal government’s tax reforms, which he described as “pro-people and pro-growth.” Highlighting the reforms, he noted that individuals earning below ₦1 million annually—₦800,000 as income and an additional ₦200,000 for health and housing allowances—are now exempt from tax. Additionally, sectors such as agriculture, health, and education also benefit from tax exemptions.
“These reforms are designed to ease the financial burden on low-income earners while fostering growth in critical sectors. We, as political office holders, must remain sensitive to the needs of the people and committed to supporting these transformative initiatives,” Abiru emphasized.
