Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, has called for stronger collaborations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom to unlock economic growth opportunities.

Speaking in Lagos at an event organized by the Bridge Club and themed “Prosperous Future: Unlocking Mutual Growth for Nigeria and the United Kingdom”, the lawmaker emphasized the importance of bilateral partnerships in driving development across key sectors such as trade, education, agriculture, manufacturing, and technology.

Abiru highlighted Nigeria’s untapped agricultural and technological potentials as vital pathways for diversifying non-oil exports.

“Nigeria’s agricultural sector, despite its vast potential, remains underdeveloped. By investing in modern farming techniques, expanding agro-processing, and strengthening supply chains, we can transform this sector,” he said.

“Similarly, our tech industry has already drawn global attention. By fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurs, Nigeria can emerge as a leader in digital transformation.”

Senator Abiru expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic trajectory under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, citing significant policy reforms aimed at achieving a $1 trillion economy.

He noted the removal of the fuel subsidy, which has allowed for greater investments in education, health, and infrastructure, as well as foreign exchange unification, which has boosted investor confidence and market liquidity.

“The current administration’s bold initiatives are laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth,” Abiru noted. “Reforms like banking sector recapitalization and tax modernization are critical for fostering a resilient economy and unlocking our potential.”

The event’s host, AbdulHakeem Uthman Mustapha, SAN, President of the Bridge Club, praised both the British High Commissioner, Dr. Richard Montgomery CMG, and Senator Abiru for their insightful contributions. Mustapha described Abiru as an accomplished professional dedicated to public service.
