Former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
According to The Independent, Sani had, since 2019, been planning his defection to the PDP but had to make an alternative move to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).
He formally joined the opposition party on Thursday, and was reported to have met with the 23 local government chairmen of the PDP in his state at his residence.
The Independent stated that his defection to the PDP is not any way unconnected to his gubernatorial ambition as the flagbearer of the party in the 2023 elections.
Recall that the former senator tendered his resignation from the PRP with immediate effect in July 2021.
He joined PRP in October 2018 and announced the defection from the party in a letter dated July 9; directing it to the PRP chairman in ward six, Tudun Wada, Kaduna.
The letter obtained by Premium Times read, “I wish to formally notify you of my decision to step aside from the Peoples Redemption Party. This notice takes effect from today.”
Without giving reasons for his resignation and if he would joining another party as soon as possible, Mr Sani added that “I hope we shall continue to relate in the spirit of our struggle, our shared history, and our common ideological principles”.
