Ikorodu witnessed a historic convergence of political and traditional leaders in the city as Senator Tokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East, brought the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and other top dignitaries to celebrate the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ayangbure of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi.
The event, held at the Musical Village in Ikorodu, was more than a royal celebration; it was a demonstration of how Abiru has used his national influence to spotlight Ikorodu’s cultural heritage and socio-economic potential.
The grand celebration drew an impressive lineup of dignitaries including former Lagos Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Rep. Babajimi Benson, Lagos First Lady Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Mrs Oluremu Hamzat who represents First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
Senator Barau, who chaired the occasion, hailed Oba Shotobi for his visionary leadership, while also praising Abiru’s impact in the Senate, particularly his contributions to legislative reforms and infrastructure projects that directly affect Lagos East.
“Senator Abiru has proven that effective representation can deliver tangible change. His efforts in pushing major bills into law and securing key federal road projects have placed Ikorodu on the map as a model of progress,” Barau said.
The Deputy Senate President also commended Abiru’s community initiatives, particularly the SAIL Empowerment Foundation and its Innovation Lab, which he described as “a legacy project equipping youths with 21st-century skills for global competitiveness.”
For Senator Abiru, the coronation anniversary was an opportunity to highlight the synergy between traditional leadership and modern governance.
He described Oba Shotobi as a monarch whose reign has brought “peace, unity, and prosperity”.
He also adds that Ikorodu’s growing relevance at the national level reflects both the king’s cultural stewardship and the community’s strong political representation.
With cultural performances, tributes, and royal processions, the event underscored how Ikorodu has become not only a cultural capital but also a political force, thanks to the alliance between its traditional institution and its elected representatives.
