Senator Abiru Leads STEM-Driven Educational Reforms at Government College Lagos’ Golden Jubilee

Senator Tokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East in the 9th Nigerian National Assembly and a prominent alumnus of Government College Lagos (GCL), played a key role in marking the institution’s 50th anniversary by spearheading transformative educational initiatives.

For Senator Abiru, the event was more than a celebration; it was a reaffirmation of his commitmentto education. Reflecting on his personal journey, he credited GCL for shaping his life and career. “Growing up in Lagos, attending this great institution—Government College, Eric Moore, Lagos—laid the foundation for all I have achieved, both personally and professionally,” he remarked.

As part of the anniversary, Senator Abiru contributed significantly to revitalizing GCL’s infrastructure. Through the SAIL Empowerment Foundation, which he founded alongside his wife, Mrs. Feyisola Abiru, he led the establishment of the GCL STEM Lab. This cutting-edge facility, launched during the event, aims to equip students with modern tools and resources for innovation.

“The SAIL Innovation Lab, in collaboration with Co-Creation Hub, is our commitment to not just restore, but reimagine public education,” Senator Abiru emphasized. “We’re creating an inclusive space where students from all backgrounds can collaborate and prepare for the future.”

Senator Abiru’s vision for education extends beyond GCL, focusing on broader access across Lagos and Nigeria. “Our goal is to ensure that every child can access world-class education. It should empower our youth to dream, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society,” he stated.

The anniversary also saw Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu overseeing the commissioning of additional projects facilitated by Senator Abiru, with support from the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These projects included the rehabilitation of a 700-seater auditorium, installation of 24 new toilets, reconstruction of administrative offices, and refurbishment of large lecture halls and staff rooms.

In his closing remarks, Senator Abiru expressed deep gratitude to his alma mater, acknowledging its role in shaping generations of leaders. “Government College Lagos has long been a beacon of excellence. With continued efforts and strategic investments, we can ensure it remains an institution that inspires and empowers future leaders for years to come.”
