Senate Rescinds Decision, Sets To Screen 12 INEC Commissioners

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday acknowledged a letter from the House Committee on INEC which contained 12 screened Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC), their confirmation is to be followed afterwards.

The report was laid before the Senate by the Committee Chairman, Senator Suleiman Nazif (APC Bauchi) and seconded by Senator Mohammed Hassan (PDP Yobe SOuth).

The laying and acceptance to confirm the 12 RECs is coming days after the Senate vowed not to henceforth confirm any nominees from the executive following a disagreement on the appointment of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The 12 nominees include; Sam Olugbadebo Olumekun (Ondo State), Mrs Asamu Sani Maikudi (Kastina), Rufus Akeju (Lagos), Mahmud Isah (Kebbi), Mike Igini (Delta), Mustapha Zubairu (Niger) Riskuwa Shehu (Sokoto State).

Kassim Gana Geidam (Yobe), Jibrin Ibrahim Zarewa (Kano), Abdulganiyu Olayinka Raji (Oyo), Samuel Egwu (Kogi) and Ahmad Bello Mahmud (Zamfara State).

It was gathered that the nominees will be confirmed in some days time following the report by the Committee.

The Senate had on June 1st confirmed 15 out of the 27 RECs nominees sent by the Presidency. It was learnt that the Committee on INEC disclosed the remaining 12 nominees were still undergoing screening.

Those confirmed then were Hussaini Haliru Pai (FCT) Alhaji Ahmad Makama (Bauchi) and Sadiq Abubakar Musa (Kaduna) were reappointed. Also confirmed as new RECS were Professor Godswill Obioma (Abia), Ibrahim Abdullahi (Adamawa), James Iorliam Apam (Benue), Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji (Ebonyi), Dr. Ilona Joseph Valentine Chuks (Enugu), Dr. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda (Plateau), Umar Ibrahim (Taraba), Emeka Ononamadu Joseph (Imo), Obo O. Effanga (Cross River), Professor Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu (Anambra), Dr. Briyai O. Frankland (Bayelsa) and Agboke Mutiu Olaleke (Ogun.)
