In a rather surprising move, the President of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmad Lawan has joined the long list of presidential aspirants under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to The Punch, some political associates of Lawan visited the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on Monday, to purchase the APC presidential expression of interest and nomination forms pegged at N100m, on his behalf.
Speaking about the move, the leader of the group, Sam Nkire noted that Nigeria is in need of a President without ethnic-induced sentiments.
“We are not here on our own, we have his backing. Even though friends and brothers contributed to purchase this form for him but he has given us the go-ahead,” he was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Though the Senate President is yet to formally declared his intention to run for president, the purchase of the nomination forms already signifies that he would be jostling for the APC presidential ticket.
This development means Lawan would be squaring up against other bigwigs in the ruling party, such as former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello; his Ekiti and Cross River States counterparts, Kayode Fayemi and Ben Ayade; among others.
