Senate passes bill to grant financial autonomy to local governments

The Nigerian Senate has passed the Local Government Financial Autonomy Bill into law.

At the plenary on Tuesday, ninety two senators voted in favour of the passage of the bill during the sessions on the report of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution (Fifth Amendment) Bills 2022.

The financial autonomy bill grants full financial autonomy to the local governments in Nigeria.

According to the bill, each local government council is to create and maintain its own special account to be called Local Government Allocation Account into which all the allocations from the federation account and state government will be paid.
