In commemoration of the 2025 International Literacy Day, School In The Street (SITS) in collaboration with Rotary District 9111 hosted a special literacy event for street-connected children in the Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, drawing attention to the urgent educational needs of underserved children.

The programme, themed around the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right, provided a platform for children living and working on the streets to showcase their abilities through reading and spelling competitions, as well as a psychosocial session designed to build resilience and equip them with vital social skills.

A key highlight of the celebration was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between School In The Street and Rotaract District 9111.

Under the agreement, Rotaract Clubs across the district will mobilise their members to serve as volunteer literacy facilitators, vocational instructors, lay counsellors, and activity coordinators at SITS mobile learning centres.

Speaking at the event, organisers emphasised that the partnership would help bridge the gap in manpower and ensure that more street-connected children have access to free and quality learning opportunities.

“With this MoU, Rotaract District 9111 has committed to engaging its members in creating a more literate, skilled, and empowered society for street-connected children and youths,” SITS stated.

The initiative reflects a broader call for action to make education free, inclusive, and accessible for all children, regardless of their background or circumstances.
