Sola Giwa, former Special Adviser on Transportation to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is poised to challenge incumbent lawmaker, Hon.Kayode Moshood Akiolu, for the Lagos Island Federal Constituency II seat in the House of Representatives.

Giwa’s intention to join the race follows his resignation from the state cabinet, a move he formally announced on Wednesday via his official X handle.

In his statement, the ex-aide said his decision came after “deep reflection and wide consultations,” noting that he is answering a “higher call” to represent the people of Lagos Island Federal Constituency II at the national level.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for the opportunity to serve in his administration, adding that his tenure contributed to ongoing efforts to transform Lagos’ transport system under the THEMES+ Agenda.

Giwa’s entry into the race sets up a high-profile contest within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as he is expected to face Hon. Kayode Moshood Akiolu, a two-term lawmaker and son of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu.

Akiolu has represented the constituency in the green chamber since 2019 and is widely regarded as a strong political figure within Lagos Island politics.

Political observers say the emerging contest could reshape the dynamics within the APC in the constituency, with both candidates expected to rely on their political networks and grassroots support.

While the election is still some time away, Giwa’s declaration signals the start of what may become one of the most closely watched intra-party battles in Lagos State ahead of the next general elections.
