Lagos State University (LASU) is set to receive a major digital infrastructure boost as the Lagos State Chapter of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) finalises plans to donate a fully equipped Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre to the institution.

The proposed intervention was unveiled on Thursday, January 15, 2026, during a courtesy visit by a seven-man RTEAN delegation to the Vice-Chancellor’s office at the university’s main campus in Ojo, Lagos. The delegation was led by the association’s Deputy Operations Officer, Chief AbdulKareem Babatunde, who represented the State Chairman, Comrade Shamsuddeen Ajala, alongside the LASU Chapter Chairman of RTEAN, Comrade Nurudeen Eniafe.

Babatunde said the decision to invest in an ICT Centre for LASU was informed by the consistent and positive contributions of the university’s RTEAN chapter to campus life. He explained that the association sees education as a critical driver of social transformation and is committed to expanding access to digital skills for students and young people across Lagos State. According to him, the initiative aligns with RTEAN’s broader focus on corporate social responsibility, human capital development and strengthening technological capacity within tertiary institutions.

Eniafe, a former student leader and current PhD candidate at LASU, highlighted several interventions already undertaken by the association on campus, including scholarship support, driver education programmes and efforts to improve safety around bus stops. He described the planned ICT Centre as a natural extension of RTEAN’s resolve to support education and give back to the university community.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a model of productive collaboration between the university and external stakeholders. She noted that the project aligns with LASU’s digitalisation agenda and reinforces its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most innovative universities.

“What you are doing goes beyond LASU,” Enikuomehin said. “You are reshaping perceptions about RTEAN and demonstrating how town and gown can work together to advance learning and innovation.”

She also commended alumni and postgraduate students serving within the association for bringing intellectual depth and professionalism to its activities.

The proposed ICT Centre, which is expected to take off soon, will include a 250-seat Computer-Based Test (CBT) hall, laptops, administrative offices, internet connectivity, power backup systems and a holding bay.

Several senior university officials were present at the meeting, including Professor Fatai Ogundele, Chairman of the Master Plan Committee; Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs; Dr Lateef Sekoni, Deputy Registrar, Vice-Chancellor’s Office; Mr Babatunde Ashiyanbi, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology; Engineer Bajulaye, Head of Physical Planning; Mr Gbenga Sadiku, Deputy Registrar, Students’ Affairs Division; Mrs Omolara Dosunmu, Deputy Registrar, DICT; and other officials from the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.
