The political crisis in Rivers State has taken a new turn after members of the Rivers State House of Assembly commenced formal impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.
The impeachment move was initiated during a plenary session on Thursday, January 8, 2026, presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule. The Majority Leader, Major Jack, read a notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Fubara, signed by 26 lawmakers, marking the official start of the impeachment process under provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.
Among issues cited in past versions of the impeachment push are accusations of financial mismanagement, demolition of the Assembly complex, extra‑budgetary spending, and failure to observe constitutional obligations though formal specifics for the latest notice are expected to be served to the governor within seven days.
In the same session, a separate notice of gross misconduct was also presented against Deputy Governor Oduh by the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart.
The development adds to ongoing political tensions in the oil‑rich state, where divisions between the governor and lawmakers loyal to his predecessor have previously led to major confrontations and even a state of emergency last year.
