Rivers State Govt Fires 20 Contractors Over Port Harcourt Flood

Due to the flood that have caused havoc in Port Harcourt recently, the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), has terminated the contracts of 20 de-silting contractors under its body.

The Sole Administrator of RIWAMA, Chief Felix Obuah, while disclosing this in a statement released to the press in Port Harcourt, said that the decision to relieve the contractors of their jobs was reached after a meeting with them recently.

In the statement, which was signed by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr. Jerry Needam, stated, “The sacking, which is with immediate effect, became necessary due to the lukewarm attitude of the de-silting contractors to their job and which is no longer tolerable by the agency.

“The Rivers State Waste Management Agency can no longer allow the contractors continue to flout its directives with impunity,” the statement read.

“That same stubbornness of the contractors is partly responsible for the regrettable flooding being recorded in parts of the state for which the governor, Chief Nyesom Wike is very disturbed.”

While frowning on the continued pouring of solid wastes into gutters and waterways by residents, Obuah, said that the sacking of the erring de-silting contractors would serve as a lesson for other contractors engaged by RIWAMA to take the agency’s directives seriously.
